MOON BATH FAQ
What is a Botanical Bath Tea?
A Bath Tea is a blend of dried botanicals including the leaves, flowers, roots, and barks of medicinal plants that is prepared as an infusion. The herbal blend is steeped in hot water, just as you steep tea for drinking. Then, rather than sipping on the tea, this botanical infusion is added to your bath water so the benefits of the plants can be absorbed directly through your skin.
What are the benefits of bathing with Moon Bath’s Botanical Bath Teas?
Bath bubbles and synthetic chemicals are OUT, infusions and botanicals are IN! Why? Because the skin is our largest organ and, amazingly, it absorbs anything we expose it to. When you add Moon Bath’s Botanical Bath Teas to your bathing ritual, you’ll receive the healing benefits of plants absorbed through your skin.
Some of the benefits you may experience include:
Brightening of the skin, hair and eyes
Reduced stress and anxiety
Increased levels of joy...via serotonin
Improvement of circulation of blood and lymph
Soothed sore or tight muscles
Relief of pain and discomfort
Relief of sinus congestion
Improved oxygen intake
Reduced flu and cold symptoms
Encouragement of a light, detoxifying sweat
To learn more about the unique benefits of each plant in our blends, refer to each Botanical Bath Tea description.
While bathing in herbal infusions has many benefits and few adverse effects, we advise you to consult a health professional before embarking on any form of hydrotherapy if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have a pre-existing health condition.
Can I pour the dry botanicals directly into my tub?
To maximize the plant benefits, we recommend that you steep your Bath Tea for 15-20 minutes, in just below boiling hot water, in either a French Press or on stovetop, and then strain and pour the infusion (tea) into the water. The reason for steeping the botanicals in advance, is that bathwater never gets hot enough to properly extract the medicinal properties from the botanicals, so if you want to unlock all of their potent, juicy medicine, you need to steep them in hot water first. We also prefer pouring only the tea, and straining out the leaves and flowers, to eliminate messy cleanup and potential clogged drains.
What are the benefits of bathing with Moon Bath Infused Sundance Sea Bathing Salt?
The benefits of bathing in salt water have long been heralded for enhancing health. Similarly, bathing in warm water with our Infused Sundance Sea Bathing Salt stimulates circulation, promotes cellular regeneration, detoxifies the skin, promotes healing, reduces inflammation, relaxes muscles, and relieves pain and soreness. Our Milk + Honey Infused Salt also includes coconut milk powder, which hydrates the skin and increases moisture retention, leaving your skin feeling silky soft. You can add Infused Sundance Sea Salt directly to your bath water, or use it as a gentle exfoliant in the shower. Milk + Honey Bathing Salt make an excellent gift paired with the Botanical Bath Teas, as who doesn’t want a little milk and honey in their tea?!
What temperature should my bath be?
The temperature of your bath water is a unique opportunity to enhance the healing benefits of the water and botanicals. We recommend bathing in water that is warm, or approximately 90 - 98 degrees fahrenheit (just below body temperature), less hot than a standard hot tub. This temperature produces a sensation of warmth on the skin, diminishes tenseness of the pulse, slows down respiration, relaxes the skin and muscles, relieves irritability, reduces inflammation, and prepares you for the best sleep. Bathing in water below 90 degrees has its own set of benefits. Though you wouldn’t want to stay in as long, bathing in water that is around 75 degrees will awaken you with a quick, vital impulse that increases blood flow, oxygen absorption, tissue regeneration and elimination of cellular waste. Bathing in water warmer than 98 degrees will result in a stimulating experience that causes excitement of the pulse, quickening of respiration, increased perspiration, and excitement of the brain and nerve centers. This may be useful for short, detoxifying baths, but not for longer than 10 minutes. We recommend using a proper thermometer to determine the perfect bath temperature.
How long should I bathe for?
An effective amount of time to soak is 20 - 25 minutes, while maintaining the temperature of the water, but feel free to stay immersed longer...we know it’s a true joy!
What is a Lunar Blend?
Moon Bath’s Lunar Blends are Botanical Bath Teas that are formulated to enhance your connection to the phases of the moon (New, Waxing, Full and Waning) in a weekly bathing ritual that restores balance, and wellbeing. The botanical ingredients in each Lunar Blend are thoughtfully chosen by our Co-Founder and Ayurvedic Practitioner, Sierra Brashear, to both balance and leverage the potent energies that are available to us during each lunar phase.
When should I take my baths using the Lunar Blends?
While all of the Lunar Blends promote healthy skin, healing and relaxation, we encourage you to bathe weekly with the specific Botanical Bath Tea that corresponds to the current phase of the moon in order to receive the most potent energetic benefits. To understand the lunar phases and when to take each bath, reference our Bathing Guide and hang our beautiful, color-coded Lunar Calendar in your home.
Will I still receive benefits if I take a Lunar Bath not during its respective phase?
Yes! The idea of the Lunar Blends is to help you become aware of the rhythms of nature happening around you, starting with the Moon, and to align yourself with the energies of each phase. Having said that, if you’re feeling like you need some calming, grounding energy during the Full Moon, it makes sense for you to take the New Moon Bath. And likewise, if you’re needing to be uplifted and energized during the New Moon, by all means, take the Full Moon Bath. The point is to become aware of the subtle natural shifts around you, recognize the influence on your internal landscape and honor your own needs.
What is the Lunar Cycle?
One lunar cycle is how long it takes for the moon to circle around the Earth, and the changes in its visibility and energies as it transits. During a lunar cycle, which is 27-29 days, the moon’s visual appearance from Earth changes from a being invisible or a thin crescent (New Moon) gradually towards a being fully visible and appearing as a bright circle (Full Moon) and then gradually wanes in appearance until it is imperceptible again. The way the moon appears in the sky depends on where it is in relationship to the sun and thus how much of its surface is illuminated by the sun. The lunar cycle can be broken into four phases that are each roughly a week long: New Moon, Waxing Moon, Full Moon, and Waning Moon.
What are the different phases of the Lunar Cycle?
The New Moon phase is the week during which the moon is invisible or appears as a slender crescent, the sky is dark and the stars shine bright.
The Waxing Moon phase is the week in which the New Moon builds toward the Full Moon, and more of the moon is visible each night.
The Full Moon phase is the week during which the moon is the most visible, the time in which the moon appears as a bright, round circle in the sky.
The Waning Moon phase is the week during which the Full Moon fades to the New Moon and less of the moon is visible each night.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient and vast system of holistic healing from India. The Sanskrit word Ayurveda translates as “knowledge of life” and encompasses a wide array of practices to maintain and improve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual vitality. At the core of Ayurvedic understanding is the understanding that living in alignment with the rhythms and elements of nature is the best medicine. Ayurvedic treatments include personalized nutrition, daily routines and self-care practices that promote balance and alignment. We have thoughtfully crafted every Moon Bath product to align with the wisdom of this time-tested body of knowledge.
Does Moon Bath use any synthetic chemicals or preservatives?
